Stop & Think Dashboard prototype
Details
Role: Research Fellow, designer
Research project: UnLocke — www.unlocke.org (a collaboration between Birkbeck College and University College London)
Project Principle Investigator: Prof. Denis Mareschal (Birkbeck College, University of London)
Funders: Educational Endowment Foundation (EEF), Wellcome Trust
Audience: Primary school teachers using UnLocke’s Stop & Think software
Description: The Stop & Think game trains primary school children (Year 3 and 5) to apply their inhibitory control skills, i.e. to stop and think, when answering counterintuitive questions in science and maths. In doing so, they are able to suppress their naive beliefs and misconceptions, allowing the correct answer to come to mind. When tested with over 6000 children across 89 UK schools over 10 weeks, the game was found to be effective at improving children’s performance on counterintuitive reasoning tasks and standardised maths and science assessments. This teacher dashboard concept is intended to increase teachers’ buy in to the project and sustain children’s engagement in the intervention in future deployment of the game. It contains 3 components (imaged below):
The Topic Picker allows teachers to choose the order presentation of topics over the course of the 10-week intervention.
The Leaderboard tab show’s the classroom statistics, a top-10 leaderboard, and achievements earned.
The Avatar Shop allows classrooms to spend their tokens earned during gameplay and through achievements on avatar components, to customise their avatar.
Medium: Affinity Designer (mockups)
